ORNAC Standards Position Statement: Covid-19

Every hospital in Canada must refer to their provincial/territorial and regional public health authorities when developing policies and guidelines to support clinicians and patient care. The spread of Covid-19 is currently being managed by implementing the following precautions: airborne (for aerosol generating procedures), droplet and contact. For further information about infection prevention and control measures please refer to this link Section 2, 2.1-2.4 of The ORNAC Standards, Guidelines, and Position Statements for Perioperative Registered Nurses (2019). For more specific information about the management of a Covid-19 patient in the perioperative setting we have provided some  links for various provincial public health agencies.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols, including doffing and donning and where and when PPE is needed, should follow the guidelines as outlined by your provincial/territorial health authority when providing care for a Covid-19 patient. There has been some variability noted between some of the PPE doffing  recommendations that have been published by various organizations. ORNAC continues to recommend our published doffing procedures which align with one of the doffing options published by the CDC.

Perioperative Registered Nurses should look at their process in their operating rooms to determine the best way to keep paper charts/documentation clean/away from potential sources of contamination. Since there is variability in the size of operating rooms across Canada process may differ between organizations.
