Welcome to ORNAC!

ORNAC has been around since 1983!  Amazing to think about isn’t it? The nurses who worked hard to form ORNAC have laid an inspiring foundation for our national organization to continue to thrive on.   Think of the changes in technology and surgical techniques that we have seen since then.  Fast forward to 2021 when we have seen advances in online communication that have allowed ORNAC to successfully host a completely virtual conference.  We now have access to so much technology both inside and outside of the operating room.  We should be using this technology to our advantage to continue to forge relationships amongst perioperative nurses across Canada.

My goal is to see ORNAC continue to grow.  We currently have over 1000 members, but there is room for more!  We are slowly emerging from one of the greatest healthcare crises that we have ever seen globally.  Perioperative nurses have been stretched to the limit coping with new directives and often new practice surroundings.  Never have I relied more on the support of my colleagues than in the past year and a half that I have been working as a perioperative nurse.  We have adjusted to the discomfort of full PPE in very challenging circumstances, we have learned to communicate using just hand signals and body language.  All while caring for patients who are sicker than they have ever been before.

On that note, I’d like to see our members fully engaged within our ORNAC community.  What does membership with ORNAC offer you as a perioperative nurse?

I am very pleased with the work that ORNAC’s executive and board of directors have started with in May of this year.  As a Not-for-Profit Organization, the work put in by this dedicated group of volunteers is what is keeping ORNAC an active and viable association for our members.
