"Electrosurgical Best Practices for Minimally Invasive Procedures"

The number of minimally invasive procedures done in operating rooms around the world has increased since the beginning of the laparoscopic revolution of the early 1980s. As MIS technology continues to develop, more complex procedures are added to the list of those that surgeons can do. Just as in open procedures, electrosurgical devices are still the primary means to dissect tissue and control bleeding. This program will discuss safety concerns and discuss best practices for reducing the likelihood of patient injury related to electrosurgery during minimally invasive procedures.

Key Points of Discussion:

  • Discuss electrosurgical hazards that can be present during minimally invasive procedures.
  • Relate how endoscopic instrumentation can contribute to safety concerns during minimally invasive procedures.
  • Identify best practices that can contribute to patient safety during endoscopic surgery.
  • Describe how technological innovations can enhance safety and reduce the potential for injury during minimally invasive procedures.
